The Sunday reset

One afternoon routine that closes the week and opens the next. Laundry, a 20-minute tidy, a rough meal plan, a short review and three priorities.

What a reset is for

A week that ends properly starts properly. The Sunday reset is an hour, give or take, that turns the leftover week into a clean one: clothes washed, surfaces clear, a vague idea of dinners, and three things you have decided matter.

It is not a productivity ritual. It is closer to tidying the kitchen before guests arrive, except the guest is Monday.

The template

The Sunday Reset routine has five steps, scheduled for Sunday afternoon:

  • Laundry
  • Tidy, 20 minutes
  • Meal plan: rough is fine, dinners only
  • Review the week: what worked, what did not
  • Plan the week: three things that matter

Laundry and Tidy are linked to habits, so finishing those steps checks them in. The other three are one-off steps with a note each, which is all they need.

Why this order

Laundry goes first because it runs itself: start the machine, then do everything else while it works. Tidy second, because a clear table makes the thinking steps easier. Meal plan before review, because it is mechanical and warms you up. Review before plan, because you cannot plan a week without a quick look at the last one.

By the time you reach "Plan the week," the laundry is done and the apartment looks better, which is the mood you want to be planning in.

Run it in run mode

Tap Start and the routine takes over the screen one step at a time. The 20-minute tidy gets a countdown, which is the difference between tidying for 20 minutes and tidying until you get distracted. The other steps show their note and wait for Done.

If the afternoon gets interrupted, close the app. The routine resumes at the same step when you come back, even hours later.

The review step, in two minutes

Do not overthink this one. Open Insights, look at the last seven days on the heatmap, and answer two questions: what went well, and what kept getting skipped? Write the answer as a one-line note on the step if you like. That is the review. The longer version, once a month, is in monthly review with Insights.

The plan step, in three lines

Three things that matter this week. Not twelve. If you have a Plan tomorrow habit, the Sunday version is the same idea with a longer horizon; plan tomorrow tonight is the daily cousin of this step.

Put the three things somewhere you will see them on Monday morning: a note on the routine, a sticky on the fridge, the top of the Monday to-do list.

Making it yours

Common edits, all of which fit within the Free limit of six steps:

  • Add Fresh sheets, which is weekly anyway and pairs with laundry
  • Add "water the plants" if Sunday is their day
  • Swap "meal plan" for "grocery order" if that is how dinners happen in your house
  • Shorten the tidy to 10 minutes if 20 feels like a project; a tidy home in ten minutes a day argues for little and often

The routine is scheduled on Sunday, but Saturday works just as well. Pick whichever afternoon is reliably slow.

When Sunday disappears

Some Sundays are travel days, hangover days, or days with other people's plans in them. Skip the routine; the streak stays neutral. Or run the two steps that matter most (laundry and the three priorities) and skip the rest within the routine. A partly run reset still beats a Monday with no clean socks.

Try it in Sweepifi

Add the Sunday Reset routine, set a reminder for mid-afternoon, and run it this weekend without editing it. Edit it the week after, once you know which steps you actually did.
